The Otter TERREX Trail, presented by EasyEquities, has always embraced evolution. Its latest chapter, however, marks an especially exciting and natural progression: a longtime member of the Otter family, who has spent years shaping the event from behind the scenes, is stepping into the role of Race Director. Meet Nina Weiss, the new Race Director, whose deep roots in the event and the community make this transition feel like the most authentic next step.
Having walked over a decade-long journey with the event, and of course having spent the last two years as Event Manager, Nina knows the Otter inside and out. Her journey with the race began at 19 years old, where she first volunteered with the event’s founders, the Collins family. What started as a way to gain some experience quickly became a passion — one that saw her take on increasing responsibility, from assisting with registration to handling route marking and managing Munchie Point.
“I’ve been part of Otter for almost 12 years, in almost every role you can imagine. It feels like coming home every year,” Nina shares. “The Tsitsikamma coastline is where I grew up, so this race is more than just an event to me. It’s a part of who I am.”
Over the years, Nina’s bond with the Otter TERREX Trail only deepened. When the opportunity to step into the role of Event Manager in 2023 arose, it felt like the perfect alignment of timing and purpose — coming just after the birth of her daughter. It was a chance to merge her passion for the race with a new chapter in her life. Now, as Race Director, Nina is bringing her years of experience, her dedication to the Otter community, and a fresh, inspired energy to lead the event into its next phase.
Nina’s long history with the event, coupled with her deep connections to the team, makes this transition feel both natural and seamless. “The Otter team is more than just a group of colleagues — they’re a close-knit family, united by shared values of respect, collaboration, and community,” says Nina. It’s this strong sense of camaraderie that makes the Otter TERREX Trail so unique, and it’s something Nina is committed to nurturing even further as Race Director. Over the years, she has earned the trust and respect of her team, and the community fully embraces her vision, supporting her with unwavering belief and enthusiasm.

“As a team, we’ve built relationships over the years that go beyond just working together,” she explains. “We trust each other, and that trust is essential, especially when things get hectic during race week. We’re all invested in the success of the event, and that makes a huge difference.”
Beyond her experience and relationships, what sets Nina apart as a leader is her approach: empathetic, inclusive, and driven by collaboration. She aims to lead with integrity, always prioritizing open communication and mutual support. “I don’t see myself as above the team, but as part of it,” she says. “My goal is to create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute.”

There’s also the significance of Nina being a woman at the helm of such a prestigious event. While she embraces the responsibility, she doesn’t see herself as an exception. Instead, Nina views her role as part of a growing movement of women in leadership positions across sport and events. “I hope that by stepping into this role, I can help pave the way for more women to take on leadership roles, not just in sport, but in any field.”
For Nina, this opportunity is about more than just race logistics or operational success. It’s about continuing the legacy of the Otter TERREX Trail — a legacy built on conservation, community, and the spirit of adventure. “I want to ensure that the race remains true to the vision the founders set forth: a world-class event that celebrates the incredible Tsitsikamma coastline and brings people together for a shared experience.”
As the Otter TERREX Trail looks toward the future, Nina’s leadership will undoubtedly bring a fresh, but deeply rooted, perspective. With her extensive history with the race, her empathetic leadership style, and her commitment to community, the Otter TERREX Trail is in great hands.
