Growing up in White River, Mpumalanga, surrounded by adventure, his connection to the wild was nurtured by easy access to the great outdoors and time spent observing animals. He learned to “speak their language,” developing a keen sense of how to navigate these vast spaces and represent them artistically.
Adding depth to this journey is his engineering degree, an odd diversion at first glance. However, as Robbie puts it, it offered him “a whole new language of the universe: mathematics.” Studying at the University of Cape Town meant that he also gained Cape Town as a home base and with it Table Mountain as a playground. This setting of course further ignited his love for trail running, and acts as an experience that profoundly shaped both his life and his art.
