Over the years, the stakes have risen dramatically. In 2022, first-place winners received R25,000. That prize money has now quadrupled, with the first-place athletes walking away with R100,000. This R100,000 prize for the 2024 edition winners is comprised of R50,000 cash from Faces, the event organizer, and an additional R50,000 thanks to the contributions of our presenting partner, EasyEquities.
The potential to top up record-breaking bonuses by an additional R50,000 further underscores the race’s escalating prestige and the prize potential at the finish line for trail-blazing athletes. This year’s edition is a Retto year, with the Women’s Retto record currently held by Toni McCann (SA) during the 2022 edition with a time of 04:33:26, and the Men’s Retto record still held by Bartlomiej Przedwojewski’s 2018 time of 03:40:48.
The 2nd and 3rd place finishers aren’t left out of the excitement, with prizes of R50,000 and R25,000 up for grabs, respectively. Thanks to EasyEquities, these amounts will also include a portfolio of equities equivalent to the cash component of their prize, giving these athletes a solid foundation for future financial growth.
