Sibling Showdown on the Trails: Kane and Sam Reilly Set to Tackle the Otter TERREX Trail, presented by EasyEquities

This year’s Otter Race promises to be an unforgettable experience as siblings Kane and Sam Reilly gear up to hit the trails together. Kane, a seasoned competitor, carries an impressive track record with the race, having walked a 12 year history with our event. He’s performed impressively too, having finished in the top five multiple times but always narrowly missing that coveted first place. Meanwhile, his sister Sam is stepping into the spotlight for her inaugural Otter, excited to tackle the iconic course alongside her brother and discover first-hand why this trail means so much to him, and many others.

Reflecting on Kane’s journey, it’s remarkable to see how much he has evolved since his first Otter in 2012. Back then, he was just a 20-year-old university student, new to the world of trail running and still finding his footing. That race ignited a passion within him, introducing him to a community and a sport that would shape his life. “The goosebumps I felt walking around the race village were unforgettable,” he recalls, recognizing that first race as the moment he fell in love with the trails.

Over the past decade, Kane has faced numerous challenges and triumphs. His early races showcased both his talent and determination; a fifth-place finish in 2012 quickly followed by a fourth in 2013 set the stage for a series of near-misses. With six second-place finishes, Kane has often found himself tantalizingly close to victory but never quite crossing that finish line in first. Each setback taught him valuable lessons, both about racing and about himself. “I’ve had 12 memorable experiences without a win,” he reflects, acknowledging that the connections he’s built and the memories created have become just as significant as any medal.

The shift in Kane’s mindset over the years has been profound. Initially driven by a fierce desire to win, he now approaches the Otter with a sense of appreciation for the experience itself. “It’s not just about the race anymore,” he says. “It’s about the friendships, the memories, and the impact I can have on others through this sport.” As a father now, he looks forward to sharing his love for trail running with his son, Finn, hoping to inspire a new generation of runners.

For Sam, the upcoming race is a thrilling adventure. “I’m excited and nervous,” she admits. After years of supporting family and friends, she is finally stepping into the spotlight. “Otter is an iconic race, and this year everything aligned for me to compete,” she explains, emphasizing the special nature of sharing this experience with Kane. “It’s incredible to be on the start line with him and to witness firsthand how much he loves this race.”

The allure of the Otter’s stunning coastline is another driving factor for Sam. “You can’t just run this route on your own,” she says, highlighting the unique opportunity to experience the breathtaking views and diverse terrain. The course features a series of small climbs, presenting a different challenge than the steep ascents she’s used to in her mountain running. “I’m curious to see how my body responds on race day,” she adds, embracing the uncertainty of being a newbie.

Kane’s extensive knowledge of the course gives him a strategic edge, but Sam finds her lack of familiarity liberating. “Not knowing the course means I’m less likely to overthink my strategy,” she explains. “I can focus on the experience rather than the pressure of performing.” This fresh perspective allows her to enter the race with a sense of wonder, which Kane wholeheartedly encourages. “Just enjoy it,” he advises, emphasizing the importance of soaking up every moment. He does share a tip for Sam and fellow newbies to respect the Retto: “The RETTO has a sting in its tail, so keep it controlled in the first half. Gaining a minute in the early part could lose you five minutes later,” he says.

As race day approaches, Kane’s aspirations are clear: it’s less about winning, although he’d of course love to, and more about “running his perfect race,” a quest he’s been on for years. He also recognizes the deeper significance of the Otter TERREX trail, presented by EasyEquities for him—a celebration of the connections he has built over the years and the personal growth he has experienced.

For Sam, the goal is equally meaningful, though distinct. “I just want to soak up the experience,” she declares, focusing on the joy of participating rather than the pressure of competition. As the countdown begins, the sibling duo represents a beautiful blend of seasoned expertise and fresh enthusiasm, navigating the course together, sharing moments of triumph and challenge, and ultimately strengthening their bond.

In the end, the Otter TERREX trail is more than just a test of endurance; it’s a celebration of family, community, and the spirit of adventure that unites runners from all walks of life. Join us as we follow Kane and Sam on this exciting journey.
