SURVEY ON INJURY AND ILLNESS RISK IN TRAIL RUNNERS

AIM OF THE RESEARCH:

We aim to provide the trail runner with the best possible injury prevention strategies. We all love running, and hate being injured! Injury and illness prevention strategies in trail running are limited due to a lack of research on the nature of trail running injuries. The University of Pretoria’s Department of Physiotherapy and Section Sports Medicine are collaborating to help make the Otter African Trail Run an injury-free experience for future runners.
HOW WILL THE PARTICIPANTS BENEFIT FROM THE STUDY?
This information of athletes is critical in the identification of problem areas and will aid in implementing appropriate preventive injury strategies. Al participants will have access to the study findings which will help individuals of all age categories and abilities to identify their own weaknesses, to know how to manage them to better perform in the future. From a medical point of view, we are excited to be involved in this research, and to strongly promote a successful reduction in the risk of medical complications. Working together we can find solutions to the burden of injury and illness among trail runners.
HOW WILL THE OTTER AFRICAN TRAIL RUN BENEFIT FROM THE RESEARCH?
Setting up of an Otter research program with all studies aimed at injury prevention among trail runners.
Establishing a specific injury prevention strategy to be used by runners of the Otter Trail Run.
Decreasing the risk for injury will allow a more enjoyable experience on this amazing route.
ACTION PLAN- PRE-RACE MEDICAL QUESTIONNAIRE
In the final Otter newsletter, an online link will be provided where every runner will be required to complete a pre-race medical questionnaire on injury and illness related health problems. One week after the race the same questionnaire will have to be completed to allow the researchers to establish the type of injuries or illnesses that occurred during the race.
On average, the questionnaire will take 10 minutes to complete. Thank you in advance for your participation in this survey. We assure you of the confidentiality of your responses.
Be on the lookout for updates on the Otter Run Research Programme in the upcoming newsletters. Please assist us in our efforts to make a difference!
